Start early, before it gets hot, at the ruins of Fort Karl: a ten-minute climb to the best view of the harbor and its sailboats. Head back down through the narrow streets of downtown, where the island\u2019s Swedish history\u2014Gustavia owes its name to King Gustav III\u2014is still evident on the plaques and traditional houses. The Swedish bell tower and the small local museum round out this gentle history lesson.<\/p>\n
A five-minute walk from the harbor, Shell Beach unfurls its carpet of seashells at the foot of the cliffs. A swim, lunch with your feet in the sand, a nap in the shade: it\u2019s the perfect break right in the heart of the city. Photography enthusiasts will want to return here at sunset, one of the most beautiful on the island.<\/p>\n

All around, the shops range from high-end jewelry to local designers\u2014take your time strolling; the island is perfect for window shopping, even if you don\u2019t plan to buy anything.
